The 12-Steps Defined

pic - unfinished business. private little war, sb

Honesty - In an honest evaluation of my life this is what I want. To accomplish more, to "work" less (meaning in an office), to be fitter, to do some stuff in the Sierra's because if I leave California I'll miss them more than anything, except my friends, which I'll still see because most of 'em will come along.

Therefore, my first step is to plan some stuff in the Sierras and train for them. That and quit working in the office.

Faith - The 'ol "jump and the net will appear' approach never sat too well with me. Whatever, show some friggin' faith, right? I once told my brother that I would never climb 5.14. There was a time when, perhaps, I could have but I didn't and it's long gone. Who gives a shit? We're talkin' about faith.

Step 2: find a 5.14 and work out all of the moves.

Integrity - Hey, there's a route called Integrity. It just happens to be 5.14

Step 3: get on Integrity and figure out how to do it.

Surrender - to the 12 steps, I guess.

Step 4: Complete the 12-step martini drinking program

Acceptance - I must accept that, currently, I still work in an office and that I'm also in grad school.

Step 5: work 45 hours a week and study 4 hours/5 days per week.

Willingness - To accept doing things that I don't like.

Step 6: 5 days per week I will do 4 things that I don't like: stretch, workout early in the morning, workout late at night, not drink alcohol or coffee or eat meat.

Forgiveness - I will accept people's moronicness.

Step 7: and this could be hard - For 5 days per week for 4 weeks I will not bash anyone for being republican, supporting war, driving poorly, trying to kill me when I'm on my bike,  or shooting their friends whilst hunting (maybe this one should go under 'faith'.)

Maintenance - I will faithfully do all of my rehab work.

Step 8: 4 days per week I will do the 5 following things: ice, shoulder rehab exercises, knee/hip exercises, core exercises, knee and shoulder specific stretches.

Service - I will take part in our consumer lifestyle by selling things I don't need.

Step 9: sell 45 things.

Humility - Since I'm humbled daily, I'll attempt more service.

Step 10: give away 45 things to those less fortunate.

Making Contact - om.

Step 11: Perform 4.5 minutes of yoga and meditation daily (hey, it's something!)

Soul Searching - Where'd you think that exercise was going to fit in? I can't make performance part of this because it's training while in rehab.

Step 12: bike 4.5 hours per week. run 45 miles per week, complete 4 climbing specific training workouts per week (only two can be hard), jump rope 4,500 reps per week, liquid fast 4.5 days (total), lose 4.5 pounds
